Chapter 21

I watched in shock as the Ferris Wheel fell into the bay, frozen in place. Before I could recover, the next pier lit up the sky as the famous aquarium crumbled into the black waters. The next torpedo would hit the dock right in front of us.

“Hold the barrier,” I ordered Argo. “No matter what, you hold it.”

“Witchling, this is unwise.”

Traian grabbed my arm. “Don’t.”

I knew both Argo and Traian had caught a glimpse of my impulsive plan, but they needed to trust me.

I kissed Traian and pulled away. “Take care of my sister until I get back. Please.”

Before Argo or he could react, I pushed through my protection barrier and ran across the wooden dock, launching myself into the waters. As I sank deeper, I let all the anger and frustration loose in my body. My hand lit up with electricity. I held my arms wide to create a massive web of silver light.

The torpedo came hurtling toward me, but I threw everything I could into the web. The tip of the missile touched the net of magic, pushing against my body. It took all of my strength to slow it down, turn it and hurl it back toward the ship. I felt the water push me forward as I launched it.

I’m with you, Chosen One.

The torpedo hit the side of the ship with so much force the steel hull cracked. The sky above the water lit up as the vessel exploded. Unfortunately, it had already launched another missile in my direction.

The water shifted and moved about. I threw up a barrier. It grew larger than I intended like a wall of black. The torpedo detonated against the barrier, causing a wave of water to roll back toward the ship.

Thank you. I sighed and sunk to the bottom, feeling exhausted.

I needed a moment to think before more hell broke loose. I placed a barrier around myself and welcomed the cold floor of the bay. But then I saw a man stuck under one of the broken pylons from the aquarium.

No rest for the wicked.

I swam as fast as I could. Even with my strigoi strength, I was still a poor swimmer and flailed through the water until I got there. Opening my barrier to include the man, I used all my might to push the beam off his leg and grabbed him by the underarms. I kicked off of the debris to the surface. He was already unconscious. I swam him to shore just as a dozen of Octavian’s men opened fire with laser-like ammunition. Thankfully, I had my shield up around us.

I lay the man down on the pavement that hadn’t been destroyed by the explosions. The blasts rocked my barrier, but I kept it up. The man’s heart still beat, but he wasn’t breathing. I rolled him over, placed my hands on his back, and closed my eyes. Using my witch’s vision, I found the water in his lungs and pushed it out with one tap to his back.
